My Dress-Up Darling Episode 9 Review: Gender Bending Fun

After a particularly romantic outing, My Dress-Up Darling Episode 9 brings the focus back to cosplay and making costumes. Let’s see what new shenanigans the show has for us in this review!

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 9 Overview

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 9 Title

My Dress-Up Darling or Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi Wo Suru in original Japanese is a romance and slice of life anime based on a popular manga written series by Shinichi Fukuda. It is being adapted into the medium of anime by Studio CloverWorks, a studio that hasn’t exactly been having the best time of its existence right about now. The studio has faced immense criticism in just the previous year for how it handled two anime properties, Wonder Egg Priority and The Promised Neverland Season 2.

Keisuke Shinohara is directing the show. He has been directly involved in the productions of various anime series in the past, including Wonder Egg Priority and Devilman: Crybaby. My Dress Up Darling Episode 9 Review- Anyone Can Cosplay

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 9 Gojo juju

The great chef Gusteau in Pixar’s magnum opus Ratatouille said, “anyone can cook”. This was also the principle that the entire movie was based upon, showcasing a little mouse’s efforts to become the best chef in Paris. While that saying is a little too simple and lacks some nuance, there is a lot of truth to it in today’s world. While everyone can’t be good at everything, you can put your heart and mind towards anything and perform well at it if you so desire.

Well, this little show of ours is about cosplay, and naturally, that little saying also applies here. The show has been extremely faithful with its depiction of cosplay and how it is done, and this episode was no different. We have seen that cosplaying can be an extremely costly and time-consuming hobby to partake in. However, if one sacrifices a little quality and similarity, someone with passion can do a lot with surprisingly little effort and resources.

And just like that, you know the entire plot summary of the latest outing! Don’t worry, an outline doesn’t constitute a spoiler. It wasn’t an episode where anything groundbreaking happened, but whatever did happen was true to the show’s usual mode of operations and was extremely high quality. There was a certain light tone to here, which set it apart from the previous episodes in the series. Apart from the second episode (the less said about that, the better), each episode of the show has been quite an emotional outing, which this one surprisingly wasn’t.

This episode revolved around the younger of the Inui siblings and her desire to cosplay alongside her big sister. Gojo, being the sweetheart that he is, puts his heart and soul into making her dream come true as well. My Dress-Up Darling Episode 9 turned out to be quite the sweet and serene outing. Marin and Gojo’s connection has never been better, and now that Marin’s actively teasing Gojo instead of unknowingly disturbing his innocent teenage mind, their back and forth is hilarious.

With every new cosplay outfit and makeup session, the show’s character design stands out more than it already had. The way it believably transforms one character into another while still retaining the main characteristics of the original design is astounding. The colour gradient looks gorgeous, and so do the backgrounds it uses. Combined with the great soundtrack and environment design, this show is a treat to the senses. Cloverworks doesn’t get a lot right, but when it does, it turns out to be phenomenal. Yes, The Promised Neverland Season 2 still hurts. What of it?

Verdict

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 9 was another lovely and sweet offering by the show that can seemingly do no wrong. It is a genuine highlight of most peoples’ weeks and still has the potential to be much more.
