Kpop songs are loved internationally despite the language barrier. Thanks to the wholesome lyrics, vibrant music, stunning visuals, insanely good choreography, and beautiful vocals, certain first originals of brand-new groups have become global sensations. Amidst such hits, there are quite a few worst Kpop debut songs that became the trash talk of the town for immense reasons.
Be it the group’s band member/s’ lack of skills, terrible lyrics, inappropriate clothing, musical arrangement faults, etc, there have been a handful of Kpop groups that are to date mocked for their appalling entry into the Kpop world. Since South Korea has been known for its beauty standards, many bands were thrashed for having members whose visuals weren’t appealing (that’s so sad). That said, here are some of the worst Kpop debut songs that wasted the new talents and also led to disbanding of some groups.
10 Worst Kpop Debut Songs
OO – NMIXX
JYP Entertainment debuted their new girl band NMIXX in 2022 with seven members. Right after their terrible debut song OO, the team received backlash. From pointless lyrics to the clumsy music arrangement, everything about their debut song became a meme. Shortly after this incident, one member left the group causing NMIXX a huge setback. To date, not many prefer listening to their debut song however their recent songs are showered with love, thanks to their wonderful vocal abilities.
Freeze – Block B
Back in the day, Block B shined but as days went by all the members chose different paths and the most famous member of this band is Zico. While Block B band is known for their great choreography, it’s their debut song Freeze that made their reputation fall back. In the music video, the hairstyles, outfits, makeup, etc, made the boys look terrible.
Tilting My Head – Girl’s Day
Honestly, Girl’s Day’s debut song should be buried. Whether the group tried to act cute or look unique, the company made the artists look pathetic. What was even placed on top of their heads in the music video? Oh Goodness. While hearing the song and watching the video one would feel how the artists were forced to perform the auto-tuned track. The song received plenty of hate for trying to portray young women as mannequins singing rubbish lyrics.
I’ll Call You – MOA
MOA is one of the Kpop groups that had members joining and leaving before the group disbanded within two years. Their only well-known song is their debut track I’ll Call You which is still remembered for sounding horrid. More than the music video, their live stage performance embarrassed their fans due to the way they struggled to sing and dance.
Nevertheless, certain viewers liked how their raw vocals stood out with any backing track. While the girls’ singing skills did prove to be worthy, their debut song that clearly had no meaning, flipped their career.
Bird – PSY
The man who single-handedly opened the gates for the international audience, PSY, actually dropped his first song that made people believe he won’t ever become a star. PSY is one of the geniuses of KPOP who is also the owner of a top Entertainment. Regardless of his present success, his worst debut song will always be used against him.
In the music video, we can see women smoking and partying, which is a bold move taken by PSY because back when he dropped his debut solo, such scenes were considered graphic. Even to date, most of the Kpop music videos do not include such scenes so the choice PSY made had a negative effect on his career but he somehow pulled it. Yet, Bird really is a song with cranky music that has no vibe.
WA$$UP – WA$$UP
Here’s another song that shows the other side of South Korea where entertainment companies thought that a girl group will become a hit if they seductively dance and sing about butts. Clearly, the WA$$UP girl band had promising abilities but with their trashy debut song, the girls’ talents got lost.
Also speaking of the music video, did their company even spend money on it? Because the video looked super cheap and the artists weren’t styled properly. This is another reason why the girls never stood out.
Trend – Piggy Dolls
The girl group Piggy Dolls debuted with the intention to break the idol stereotypes. Consisting of three overweight artists with outstanding vocal capacities, the group would have aced in the Kpop world, but their debut song trended them as a meme than as an inspiration. Honestly, their concept of promoting body positivity deserves an applause but sadly, their first-ever original messed up their potential.
Not Young – U-Kiss
U-Kiss boy band didn’t fascinate the viewers with their group dynamics. On top of this, their debut song proved that the members would do better if they disband. Their song Not Young is all about them explaining to the world that they’ve grown up and aren’t momma’s boys. But do they look like that? All the members looked so adorable and tiny that the lyrics of the song didn’t work well. From the viewer’s perspective, it looked like a music video that was highly influenced by top bands but performed by lanky teenagers with sweet voices.
And as expected, most of the members waved goodbye to the team and now only three remain. Though they’ve produced hit songs, their debut song will always remain on the Internet, ready to wreck them.
Mazeltov – ZE:A
ZE:A debut concept was supposed to be fierce but due to the lyrics (“Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday”), their debut was a flop. Their choreography was fine but man, the stylists should really be questioned for portraying young boys like wannabes. Most importantly, Mazeltov is the kind of song that can’t be heard again.
No Playboy – 9 Muses
No PlayBoy is dedicated to young men who think they can easily get a girl. All 9 women were simply singing that they were too good to fall in love with a playboy. Okay? Is this concept a good choice for a debut? Absolutely not. Debut songs are meant to introduce a band’s musical skills but 9 muses were bashed for coming out with a moral-less song. Moreover, the music video and the set designs didn’t go well with the song’s concept. Additionally, their outfits were a big failure.
Honestly, apart from their debut song, the girl band 9 Muses really had great potential of becoming one of South Korea’s pride. After their flop debut song, their company didn’t give the ladies many opportunities to express their talents. Sadly the team dissolved and the members weren’t seen much around the industry.
